ChatGPT Ads on Shopify and HubSpot: What This Means for e‑commerce Businesses and Marketing Teams in France

On September 16, 2026, OpenAI made an announcement that goes beyond a simple product update: Shopify has become its first e-commerce partner, and HubSpot its first CRM partner, for ChatGPT Ads. For French companies, this announcement has special significance: it comes just three weeks after ChatGPT Ads became available on a self-service basis in France on August 31, 2026. In other words, France is no longer a market waiting in the wings: it is becoming a true playground for conversational advertising, and this Shopify/HubSpot integration is the logical next step.

And it’s not just another advertising channel. ChatGPT Ads has actually been around for several months now. What’s different here is that conversational advertising is moving beyond the stage of isolated experimentation to integrate directly into the workflows of your e-commerce and marketing teams—without any extra steps. That’s what makes it revolutionary!

Shopify: ChatGPT advertising directly from the back office

In practice, the ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify lets you connect an existing ad account or create one without leaving the interface. Once this step is complete, the product catalog syncs automatically to populate your campaigns. Gone are the days of having to manually rebuild the product feed, as is still often the case with other ad networks.

Merchants can then create their ads directly from their catalog, set up conversion tracking using a pixel, target by audience, geographic location, device, or product category, and track their performance (spend, click-through rate, cost per acquisition) without opening a second tool.

The rollout took place in two phases: available in the United States immediately upon the announcement, the feature became available internationally on September 23, 2026, in all countries where ChatGPT Ads is offered, including France.

For French Shopify merchants, this is now a reality—no longer just a task to check off in the corner of their calendar: as of recently, they can connect their ChatGPT advertising account and launch their campaigns directly from their back office, without waiting for hypothetical local availability or going through a third party! As they say… All that’s left to do is get started!

HubSpot: When Advertising Is Driven by CRM Data

The HubSpot integration follows a different approach. It’s no longer just about selling a product, but about connecting an advertising campaign to the customer context already stored in the CRM. Marketing teams manage their campaigns, track their performance, and follow up with leads without leaving HubSpot, drawing on what they already know about their contacts and their sales cycle.

This is a sign worth paying attention to: OpenAI isn’t just building an e-commerce acquisition channel. It’s also building a channel designed for B2B and lead generation—where the product catalog matters less than the quality of the relationship with the prospect. We revisit this topic in our article on how to build well-equipped, repeatable, and measurable sales processes with HubSpot, and in our white paper on AI transformation with HubSpot.

Managing a Campaign Using Voice Commands: Ads Manager with Natural Language Support

Another new feature common to both integrations: an Ads Manager plugin directly within ChatGPT, which allows users to create or edit a campaign using a simple instruction written in natural language. The tool also automatically suggests text and visuals based on the landing page and can adapt headlines or descriptions as the conversation in which the ad appears unfolds.

It’s not really surprising, when you think about it: it’s a “basic” principle of generative AI. Managing a campaign is becoming almost as simple as searching for information or writing a text—a fundamental shift that we regularly discuss in our AI news updates.

OpenAI is also testing—for now, with a limited number of U.S. advertisers (Newegg, Best Buy, Lowe’s, VistaPrint)—a format called Sponsored Agents. After clicking on an ad, users can start a separate, clearly labeled conversation with a brand representative to ask questions about a piece of furniture’s dimensions, delivery times, and available options before deciding whether or not to visit the retailer’s website.

This conversation is quite different from ChatGPT’s usual responses. But it offers a clear indication of the direction things are heading, as Unite.AI points out: advertising is no longer limited to a click to a landing page; it is becoming an interaction in and of itself. No French advertisers are currently participating in this pilot program, but its expansion into European markets is a trend worth watching.

ChatGPT Ads in France: What’s the Current Situation?

Before looking ahead to this new integration, it’s important to take stock of the current situation. ChatGPT Ads is no longer a tentative project in France: the advertising network rolled out its services in two phases, beginning on August 24, 2026, with the initial launch in 31 European markets (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria, among others), followed by August 31, 2026, for the self-service launch via Ads Manager—with no minimum spend requirement or mandatory intermediary—unlike the initial launch in the United States, which required a $200,000 minimum spend through partner agencies.

Here are a few useful statistics to keep in mind before getting started:

  • ChatGPT claims to have 1 billion weekly active users and has reached $1 billion in annualized advertising revenue in less than 200 days.
  • Only users of the Free and Go plans see ads: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers continue to enjoy an ad-free experience.
  • OpenAI claims a conversion rate 25% higher than that of traditional channels (according to Valiuz) and a 60% reduction in the average cost per purchase over six weeks, although no methodological details have been made public at this time.

Another distinctive European—and therefore French—feature that should not be overlooked: unlike in the United States, targeting is based neither on conversation history nor on the user’s browsing history. It is limited to the content of the current exchange and contextual elements such as location or the device being used. This restriction owes much to the European regulatory framework, with the GDPR at the forefront—a topic we explored in depth in our article on digital sovereignty and AI—and which is a game-changer for targeting: with no keywords to buy and no profiles to exploit, the quality of the product catalog becomes the true driver of visibility!

This poses a very real challenge for French e-commerce businesses: A Lengow study shows that the median product title in Europe is only seven words long, while ChatGPT requires titles that describe a use case or a requirement (“folding bike for 12-km trips”) rather than a simple product reference. Add to that the demanding requirement to keep the catalog up-to-date—with items expiring after two weeks—and automating the product feed becomes a technical necessity, not just a convenience.

How This New Channel Is Changing the French Advertising Market

Beyond the mechanics of the product, this acceleration is reshaping broader dynamics. The nature of the purchasing process itself is changing: we no longer target exact keywords, but rather conversational intent—those moments when users compare options and establish their decision-making criteria even before they’ve identified a brand. A study cited on this topic suggests that 73% of ads served on ChatGPT appear in response to queries that do not mention any brand: the battle is therefore being fought before the traditional search reflex even kicks in.

For French SEO and SEA agencies, this is shaping a new field: optimization designed to be understood by a language model rather than by a traditional search engine, a discipline that some are already beginning to call GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), complementing traditional SEO and SEA—a trend that our digital and creative agency, JETPULP, can help you navigate.

Why is this ad more than just an advertisement?

The real issue here isn’t just technical. By integrating directly with Shopify and HubSpot, OpenAI is positioning itself exactly where buying and selling decisions are made: the product catalog on one side, and customer relations on the other.

For an e-commerce business, this means that the quality and structure of product data (PIM, catalog feeds, and complete, up-to-date product listings) have become a direct prerequisite for advertising performance—much like they are for SEO or traditional price comparison sites. For a B2B marketing team, it is the CRM data—including its segments and data quality—that now also determines the effectiveness of a ChatGPT Ads campaign.

Before deciding how much of your budget to allocate to this new channel, the real question you need to ask is a more structural one: Are your product and customer data ready to be utilized by an AI-driven ad network?
