What are Shopify’s B2B features?

Widely recognized worldwide for its B2C e-commerce features, Shopify expanded its capabilities in 2023 to include B2B sales features.

The B2B features were unveiled and launched in January 2023 at Shopify Winter Edition.

Our experts had the opportunity to test these features in their entirety as part of a major B2B project for a French cosmetics brand.

In this article, we’ll explore the key B2B features of Shopify Plus that enable businesses to target a professional market.

(These features are not available with Shopify’s Basic or Advanced plans)

A Closer Look at B2B Features

A separate B2B catalog

With Shopify Plus, you can create a product catalog specifically for B2B customers, with pricing, discounts, and purchase terms tailored to your target audience. Below is a product catalog that lists specific prices for a particular segment of wholesale customers.

Customized Rates and Discounts

Allows you to set specific prices and discounts based on B2B customers, enabling differentiated pricing based on purchase volume or customer status. This is done at the customer group level, where you can set an overall discount and then add specific reductions based on individual scenarios (purchase thresholds, product categories).

Wholesale Order Management

Support for large-volume orders, customization options, and streamlined purchasing processes. Orders can be automatically approved and synced to the ERP system, or they may require manual approval in the Shopify platform’s backend.

Business Monitoring

We canassign payment terms and deadlines to companies and track whether or not they are being met.

Restricted Access

You can restrict access to certain parts of the site or certain products, making them available only to authorized B2B customers. This feature is very useful for accessing public prices (including tax) and prices (excluding tax) that have been negotiated for B2B customers.

Verification of Business Account

Implementation of a business account verification process to ensure that only authorized B2B customers have access to specific features and reserved rates. In addition to this verification process, DATASOLUTION has developed a connector that checks company information on Infolegale.fr to retrieve the company’s legal details.

This makes it possible to restrict registration to certain NAF codes, for example, and also to verify data quality in order to avoid delivery issues.

Managing Recurring Orders

It makes it easier for B2B customers to place recurring orders, thereby simplifying the procurement process.

Integration with ERP systems

Shopify canbe integrated with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)systems for efficient management of inventory, orders, and other business processes.

Quote Management

Ability to generate quotes for B2B customers, facilitating negotiations and the closing of deals.

Customizing the Purchase Process

Flexibility to customize the purchasing process to meet the specific needs of B2B customers, for example, by adding custom fields to order forms.

Integration of B2B Payment Gateways

Support for payment gateways tailored to B2B transactions, including payment-on-account options or net payment terms.

User Rights Management

Assigning different levels of access and permissions to users within the company, based on their roles.

Support for Accounts Receivable Management

Ability to effectively manage B2B customer accounts, with features such as user management, centralized billing, and payment information management.

As you may have learned in this article, the list of native B2B features in Shopify Plus is much more comprehensive and allows you to launch a B2B project in a controlled manner by using the native features of this SaaS platform, which does not require extensive configuration.

Flexibility is achieved through the use of APIs, which allow us to develop applications with custom features as needed—as we did when verifying legal information during account creation.

The solution is comprehensive, and there is still room for improvement; we’ve noticed that pure B2B platforms are still ahead in terms of process workflows. Here are two workflows that cannot be handled natively with Shopify, but are possible using workarounds:

Customized workflows: tailored to specific roles and responsibilities. This ensures that every stakeholder—from procurement to senior management—follows a structured and efficient process that aligns with their responsibilities and the company’s overall operational strategy

Multi-step approval systems: whether it’s a large order or a one-time quote request, nothing gets the green light without the necessary reviews

Nevertheless, Shopify regularly releases updates related to its B2B offerings, and it is well on its way to becoming a leader in this type of project!
